patterns and colours within the sea!!

Best Quality primary imagery. I love the patterns and combination of colours within these which have inspired me to create some vibrant samples.

This is my mood board that i have created within my workspace, I feel it has been successful and      includes all the materials/artists/colours etc I will use within my project.
Peter Pilotto is one of my inspired artists as I love the blues he works with and I feel it relates well to my sea life theme. From my past project I have decided to continue with my PVA glue samples as I can create movement with the Bruscho.

here are garments I created further into my project responding from peter pilottos work expressing waves and movement , I did this digitally by scanning in my shaving foam sample which was successful.

Carolyn Saxby has inspired me to use mixed media and combine techniques that I will be using. Also the colours she uses are vibrant and she embellishes into her work to give more texture and a better surface. I intend to follow this approach:

I feel these samples relate well to Pilotto's work, however I have used this in a different approach, I feel my samples are strong and realistic. I have also combined these with Carolyn Saxby's work by embellishing into them.

Here I have used an empasto print onto one of Pve glue samples. I like how the print contrasts well from the vibrant colours. I feel the print is successful as clear and bold.

I have selected my two favourite patterns to work from and created samples combining my favourite techniques in the style of carolyn saxby. I chosen this image in paticular as it includes a range of blues which I was inspired by from pilottos work, therefore I can combine my pva glue samples with felting, embroidery, dying, reverse (applique) and embellishing.

here I have started to manipulate fabrics with a heat gun to give texture and show layers.

This has to be one of my favourite samples as I love the use of angelina fibres. These of which are very delicate shwoing a more realistic approach.I also love the reflective side to this sample.
Here is one of my sellotape em pasto prints which I have developed by layering and stitching around the main pattern.
Scraper board sample.
Layered fabrics which were then Manipulated. I love this pattern as the two colours are contrasting and I feel my samples look effective.
This sample is made from 3d paste. I like the texture it has created as it looks more realistic as not a neat shape naturally.
The use of Shibori gave this sample depth and structure. I like the use of reflective material and I feel the shapes have turned out strongly to relate from my primary. I have approached this image in an unusual way and overall is one of my favourite samples.

I embellished this sample as I felt it added more texture and relates with Saxby's work. This sample is one of my successful , strongest pieces as theres lots going on and a combination of techniques that work really well together.
I love the vibrancy of all these samples. I felt this image was easy to work from as a simple pattern, but i have brought it across in a textiles way which I feel have worked well.I looked at the pattern close up and the fish as a whole and I feel the whole fish looks more effective.

These designs I have created from photoshop scanning in my samples and using different tools. These are my Pva glue samples combined with my favourite primary image I focused on. The image on the left is a surface design , and the right is my postcard design for my exhibiition.

Here are my set of 4 canvas's which were developed from my strongest samples and reflecting on peer feedback to ensure I combined my opinions and peers. I feel through this process there even further developed and at a better quality.

Here is my final garment modelled by a peer in my class which was I felt had the perfect appearance for this dress and who was happy to help me out! I think it looks professional and very detailed. It is more suitable for a catwalk which was my intension! I also feel I chose my pattern wisely to focus on as the colours are great and the techniques used were my from my strongest samples. This dress relates well to Pilotto and Saxby's work which I have been inspired by throughout the whole project.
Here are sections of my final garment which I paticulary loved. I feel theres great textures, layers and different medias used which I intended to achieve at the end of this project.

Here is my exhibition display! Overall it has been successful and I feel it looks professional. I like    how my canvas's flow well through to my garment showing development. I also feel the theme is brought across effectively and strongly towards to the audience.

  1. Your contextual artist Carolyn Saxby, shows your reflections very well. My personal favorite is swirls experiment, it really shows different layers of waves of movement. Also how the colours show different tones of light blue to virbrant blue. However my second favorite is the last image of this post. It gives me the sense lights reflecting reflecting under the sea.. Out of the two, keep experimenting.

  2. I really love the PVA glue experiments as these have a very liquid look to them and really represent being under water! Another idea of making liquid looking experiments is using marbling ink or very thick impasto paint.

I think the fishes tails would also make a great subject to base a garment on, as they are really floatly looking, and material such as satin and silk would really represent being underwater. If you were to make a garment out of these materials and photograph a person wearing it in the studio, whilst using a fan to blow the material about, this would give the effect of being underwater

  3. Lovely theme and choice of images for inspiration - great patterns, textures and colours. Also love the vibrancy of your mood board which is very inspiring. Thank you for choosing my work to study. It’s very interesting the different ways to experiment with texture … perhaps by building up layers with textured paints and different textures added to paint which can be applied on both paper and fabric and then stitched into to add further embellished texture. All manner of objects can be sewn or couched on when there is no natural hole in the item. Some objects can be wrapped with yarn or wire and then sewn onto your work perhaps

Your mix of colours in your pva samples are very good … very ocean like. I looked up the work of Peter Pilotto (your initial inspiration point of study) to discover his designs are quite abstract. Your samples lower down do have an abstract feel to them which also echo some of the patterns found on your fish images

A way to take your samples further could be to focus in further on your abstract designs or to focus in on Pilotto’s or the fish patterns … by placing a viewer over a chosen image and then to recreate the smaller design in different samples

You can make a small viewer but cutting two “L” shapes and then taping them together. Place your viewer over your image until you see some blocks of shape, colour or texture that you would like to recreate:

Make samples using torn paper collage … tear pieces from a magazine to recreate the image. Draw squares in your sketchbook and recreate the images using all manner of media … pencil sketches, watercolour, acrylic, oil pastel, chalks. Then next make a fabric collage by laying pieces of matching coloured/textured fabrics on calico … stitch them down with a sewing machine to hold them then add texture with lots of hand stitching and beads. This is so much fun and can then be used on finished pieces such as a bag or cushion cover

Perhaps you could construct a Peter Pilotto dress in ocean colours and textures

Hope this helps a little … best wishes Carolyn Saxby

  4. I think your PVA experiments work really well with the sequins, they look very effective and represent the sea well. I also love the effect of the angelina fibres it looks realistic and I like how it has a delicate approach.

You have got some lovely media experiments, keep going!

  5. The brusho and PVA is really effective and I like how you have combined it with fabric. To develop this further, perhaps consider experimenting with scale - larger experiments that could be presented into a garment. Overall, this is really nice and colourful work that reflects your primary imagery well.

  6. Beautiful use of patterns in your project which have been very interestingly developed into your choice of materials, especially where you have collaged them by used appliqué on. I like how your project brief is stated clearly through out your work. It would be really nice to see some surface designs using photoshop with your textured outcomes, I think they would look very effective.

Overall, an amazing project! You've done great and hope you Good Luck for your exhibition! :)

  7. The mixture of colours, textures and materials in your samples compliment each other well and reflect your intentions in a way that is abstract as well as creative. I love the tail of the dress, the rough texture with the cut outs in it resemble underwater plants to me! Love your final display Shelley, well done!

  8. i think your pva glue and brusho samples are one of your strongest as they convey movemnt which could relate to waves and the ocean.

when developing your dress you could introduce different fish patterns and a range of different colours relating to your project to make your dress more visually interesting and eye-catching.

    Olly :)
